Bookish Fashion

Bookish Fashion

Back when I was in high school, I was a pretty wild dresser. Emo fashion was in its heyday and I was a big fan, so I would commonly be seen sporting shredded jeans and stripey tights, not to mention band t shirts and brightly coloured ties (yes, I apparently thought I was Avril Lavigne). I don’t know what happened in the years that followed, but my sense of fashion seemed to calm down a lot and even slip into the mundane. I have always remained slightly alternative (I still have the crazy hair colours!), but my uniform had pretty… Read more »

It’s my second Blogiversary!

It’s my second Blogiversary!

I can’t believe it! Another year has gone by, and Boats Against The Current turns two today! When I started out blogging I was kind of doubtful as to whether or not I’d actually manage to stick with it (I’m a bit of a serial hobbyist!), so I’m pretty pleased that two years later I’m still going. I started this blog just after finishing university to have some kind of creative outlet whilst I wondered what to do next with my life, but it’s proven to be so much more than that! I’ve met some lovely people through blogging who… Read more »

What’s in a bookworm’s bag?

What’s in a bookworm’s bag?

I always see these ‘what’s in my bag’ posts on fashion and lifestyle blogs, so I thought it would be kind of cool to do a bookworm edition. Prepare for a long post though, because my bag of choice is generally a large tote bag, and I like to carry an epic amount of crap around with me! For ages I was switching between these two Penguin classics totes: But last week I bought this cool ‘Bad Luck’ print one from Redbubble so I’ve just switched to that. I was actually really impressed with the quality of this bag when it… Read more »

Are you an introvert blogger?

Are you an introvert blogger?

I’m a major introvert, and by that, I mean that I find being around large groups of people or people I don’t know particularly well absolutely exhausting. Unfortunately I work in a shop, and so I am pretty much forced to interact with other people for 9 hours a day (you can tell by the word ‘forced’ just how much I love that!), and so when I come home all I want to do is have some me-time, or spend time with people I’m 100% comfortable around (so my family, my housemate and my boyfriend…quite a select group!). In that… Read more »

How I’ve Survived 3 Months Without WiFi

How I’ve Survived 3 Months Without WiFi

OK, so maybe ‘survived’ is a little dramatic, but in this day and age internet access is considered virtually essential by most people, and that includes me! Yet somehow I’ve made it to almost three months with no WiFi, which would have been absolutely unthinkable for me a few months ago. And with no end in sight to my internet-less state, I thought I’d let you in on the secrets of how I’m surviving in the modern age without WiFi… I’ve read lots of books. OK, so I’ve always read a lot of books (that’s why I’m a book blogger… Read more »

The Six Most Common Reactions To Bright Hair

The Six Most Common Reactions To Bright Hair

So today on the blog I’m going wildly different: I’m going to be talking about hair. In particular, bright hair. As you may have noticed from my picture in the sidebar, I have a bit of a penchant for dyeing my hair bright colours, and it changes quite a lot. In fact the blue is actually two hair colours ago, I just hate taking photos of myself, so can’t be bothered updating it with every change (the fact that the above picture is just of a few boxes I’ve had left over from various experiments just goes to show how many different… Read more »

A Short Absence

A Short Absence

So, you may have noticed things have become a little sporadic around here in regards to posting (and answering comments in a timely manner!). The reason for that is that I have been pretty busy moving house this past week, and now I’m in my new flat it’s looking like we’re not going to have any Wi-Fi set up for a couple of weeks (I’m currently camped out at my mum and dad’s using their Wi-Fi to post this!). I’m going to try and post the odd thing (using my parents’ Wi-Fi again), but I thought I’d just do a… Read more »

Photos on Friday #2: Britain

Photos on Friday #2: Britain

It’s my second Photos on Friday Post! Despite the fact I’ve never been abroad (and probably because I’ve never been abroad) my home nation of Britain is a place I’ve explored quite a lot. From the beautiful lakes of the Lake District to the rolling dales of Yorkshire and the sandy beaches of Cornwall, I’ve been there, so I thought for my second Photos on Friday post I’d share some of the photos I’ve taken on some of my British adventures. A couple have already been seen on this blog (namely the Lake District ones), but the others haven’t. So… Read more »

New Year’s Resolutions 2016

New Year’s Resolutions 2016

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone! I always seem to have really mixed feelings about the New Year: on one hand it’s slightly depressing as a marker of how fast time is flying by (I can still remember the change of the millenium – I was only seven at the time, but still! How the hell is it almost 2016!?), whilst there’s also a certain positivity attached to it through the promise of a fresh start and new beginnings. This year is the same as ever, as I feel slightly reluctant to let go of what was a pretty good year… Read more »
