Camp NaNoWriMo 2020: Mid Month Update

15/04/2020 Writing 2

It’s the middle of April and the middle of Camp NaNoWriMo 2020, so I thought it was time I did a little update on my Camp NaNoWriMo project.

I actually set a pretty crazy goal of adding 60,000 words to my WIP for this month’s Camp NaNoWriMo, fully expecting not to hit that goal. It was more of an incentive to at least make some sort of significant progress on my current project, especially since there isn’t much else to do at the moment because of the lockdown.

Well, no one is more surprised than me that I’m actually on track to hit 60,000 words! I’ve written every day this month so far, and haven’t fallen behind at all, which is a first for me! As of last night I was sitting comfortably ahead of target at 28,323 words.

I feel like I’ve got into a nice rhythm now though, and I’m trying to keep up the momentum and stay in my story. There have definitely been days when I haven’t felt like writing, either when I’ve had a long, tough day at work (which is happening quite often right now!), or when I’ve hit a block in my story. But I’m so pleased with the progress I’m making, and now I feel even more like I want to hit my target.

The only problem I’m having is that my book is getting so long! I started this novel back in January, and it’s now around 68,000 words long, and I don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere close to the end. Even though I’m following a plan I keep coming up with more scenes, and I’m starting to feel like I’m just going round in circles and am not actually pushing the story forwards.

So that’s something I definitely need to be aware of, and I’m hoping to start pushing the book towards the endgame in the next 10,000 words or so.

So how is your Camp NaNo project/current WIP going? Are you managing to get much writing done during these crazy times?

That is amazing that you’re currently on track. It’s amazing how sometimes you can surprise yourself when it comes to goals you thought were crazy. I wouldn’t worry about your book getting long. Surely that’s the point of editing, your first goal is to get it all out on the page and you can think about everything else later and cut out scenes especially if you do find it’s gone round in a circle a bit.

That’s definitely true! Right now it doesnt matter if it’s getting a bit long. I just need to get the story down and then I can cut it down in editing 🙂
