Things I've Used As A Bookmark

There’s nothing worse than losing your place in a book, so having something to mark your page is a must. But am I the only one who’s used some pretty random objects to keep my page?

Here’s a few of the objects I’ve used as a bookmark:

Yes, sometimes I’m normal and use the specific object for the job! I actually have a fair few bookmarks because I used to make them (and sell them on Etsy!), but I haven’t made any in a while (it’s very frustrating trying to cut them out straight!). I still have a good stock though, so it’s pretty stupid that I ever use anything else!

is it me, or do receipts tend to get everywhere? My bag’s always full of them, my flat’s always full of them, and my car’s always full of them (you’d think more places would have switched to digital-only receipts now, wouldn’t you?). Wherever I look, there’s usually receipts and they do make good bookmarks!

Food Wrappers

Yes, I’m afraid to say I have used old food wrappers to mark the pages of my precious books…but only when it’s been the only thing to hand!

Scraps of Paper

Sometimes I’ve just ripped the corner off a piece of paper or some cardboard and used that! The only problem is that this and the food wrappers tend to look like random pieces of garbage to most people, so when I lived back with my parents my mum used to tidy around me and was forever throwing away my makeshift bookmarks!

If I’m only leaving my book for a minute to do something (ie. get snacks!), then I’ll happily mark my page with a pen, seeing as that’s something I always have lying around (annoyingly I can never find one that works when I need it though!).

My Phone

If there’s literally nothing else to hand and I need to leave my book for a minute or two then my phone will do! Because my phone is almost always on my person!

But one thing I never do? Dog-ear pages. I’m a terrible bookworm, using food wrappers and assorted rubbish to mark my page, but one thing I never, ever do is dog ear my pages. Because let’s face it: that’s irreversible! You can smooth it out as much as you like, but you’re still going to see that crease!

So are there any weird things you’ve used as a bookmark? How do you generally mark your page?

I pretty much always use bookmarks when I read. I have a large stack of them on my shelves and whenever I pick up a book to read I immediately choose the bookmark I’m going to use with that particular book. Basically, I color code my bookmark to my book. In the very rare case I didn’t do this, or I misplaced my bookmark while reading (usually because I’m sitting on it) I’ll use a tissue since I always have those lying around.

Receipts lol. I’ve done that soo many times! Anything is likely to become a bookmark if I’m desperate enough (as long as it doesn’t damage the book naturally)! 🙂

This is such a funny post! I have so many cute bookmarks but I have to admit, I’m an awful person who dog ears their books!

I’m the same in that I have so many bookmarks too, but then often don’t end up using them! It’s just whatever comes to hand 🙂

Haha, yeah, I’ve definitely done that too, where I’ve forgotten my phone is in there! Then I lose my place and drop my phone, so I should really try and just remember to keep a bookmark to hand! 🙂

You use your phone as a bookmark? Me too! It’s usually when I either don’t have a bookmark on me or when I am carrying my book to another room and can#t be bothered to find out where I’ve tucked my bookmark. Slip my phone in and it means I can carry both (but have also dropped my phone that way). I’m usually pretty good, I do have an overabundance of bookmarks now so tend to have one to hand, and sometimes discover them in books I went to start reading and but aside for something else.

I’m glad it’s not just me who does the phone thing! It’s just one of the things I almost always have to hand. And it does mean you can carry your phone easily as well as your book, but I’ve definitely dropped my phone doing that too (my poor phone gets dropped a lot!) 🙂

I have used every single one of these and lots of other weird things as well. I basically use whatever I can grab. Sometimes it’s a bookmark but often not. Right now, my book is sitting on the table with a piece of my son’s unfinished homework in it. Hmmmm…. that seems like a great decision.

I’m the same, in that I use whatever is to hand. And hey, if your son wasn’t working on that homework at the time then why not use it as a bookmark? Unless he decides to work on it and loses your page… 🙂
