What are your favourite bookish atmospheres?

Books may be categorised by genre in the bookshop and library, but I think we can all agree that within a genre, there’s usually a wealth of different types of books. Take fantasy for example: there’s a huge difference between a book by Terry Pratchett, and a book by George R.R. Martin. For me, that difference is the book’s atmosphere. Seen as I don’t have all that many bookish friends in real life, it isn’t very often that I either give or receive book recommendations (outside of the blogosphere), and in some ways I’m quite glad about that.
