My 2019 NaNoWriMo Plans

16/10/2019 Writing 2

We’re now halfway through October, and NaNoWriMo is creeping up on us, which means I’m busy making plans!

I’ve decided to be something of a NaNo rebel this year though, and am not writing a novel. Instead I’m going to attempt to write 50,000 words worth of short stories instead.

Right now I’m not sure if it’s going to be easier or harder, as on one hand I have to keep coming up with ideas, but also I surely shouldn’t get bored with my project? I did sucessfully write 30,000 words of short stories for a Camp NaNoWriMo a while back, but the differences between a daily target of 1,000 words and 1,667 seems massive when I think about it…

But I’m trying to give myself the best chance of success possible by planning ahead. I’m making loose plans for lots of short stories, and I’m mixing up the genres and styles so I hopefully don’t get bored. Thankfully I have an Evernote folder on my phone full of ideas that I’m using, and I’ve been looking up interesting writing prompts and researching things like myths and legends (because I always love writing about those!).

The only problem is I don’t know how many stories I should plan, as I won’t really know how long each is going to be until I start writing. I think I might try for 30, to be sure, but I wouldn’t have thought I’ll be doing one a day (and saying it like that makes it sound like a much bigger challenge!).

I’m certainly not kidding myself that all my stories will be great, but by the law of averages, surely some of them will be OK as a jumping off point? Part of the reason I decided to write short stories this year is because when I’ve written 50,000 word of a novel in previous years, I haven’t ended up doing anything with them. I’m hoping that this way I can take various stories I’ve written throughout the month and edit them into something publishable!

So what will you be working on during NaNoWriMo, and how are you preparing? Have you ever been a NaNo rebel and written something other than a novel?

    Hello Laura,

oh, great, I’ve done the same in NaNo last year. I wrote only short stories in various genres and it was so much fun. To be honest, I didn’t expect to win NaNo this way, but I did. I wrote about 54k words in total.

This year I’m gonna write a novel again, but I’ve already written about 3 or 4 chapters, so it’s breaking the rules as well. I might also add some short stories if I finish the novel before the end of November.

I hope you enjoy yourself this NaNo. By the way, may I ask what’s your username there? I’d like to add you to my buddies, if you don’t mind. I’m autumnchild. Feel free to add me if you like.

Btw, I love reading your blog posts, even though I’m rarely commenting. Keep it up 🙂

    Kind regards from Germany,

Wow, 54k words of short stories is incredible! That must have been a lot of stories!
And I’ve done that too before where I’ve worked on something I’ve already started. I hope NaNo goes well for you this year, and that you enjoy writing your novel!
And I’d love to be NaNo buddies! My NaNo username is Laura15. I just added you!
Thanks so much for reading my posts and taking the time to comment! 🙂
