Life Crisis: When You Don't Know Which Hogwarts House You'd Be In

Is it me, or has there been an influx of great Harry Potter merchandise around recently? Every time I venture into Primark there’s something new from t-shirts and sweatshirts, to duvet covers, mugs, cushions and socks, and Waterstones is currently full of great gift items ranging from bags and pin badges to full sets of Quidditch balls (seriously…they’re awesome!). Put simply, it has my greedy little bookworm-eyes lighting up, and I’m literally itching to get my hands on most of it!

There’s just one problem I have with buying Harry Potter merch, and it’s been haunting me for months, ever since my boyfriend took me to see Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: In Concert for my birthday (which was also awesome!). The merch table at the concert was, of course, laden with all sorts of goodies, but my eye was especially caught by the cosy looking Hogwarts house scarves, and whilst I had no money at the time, I decided that I would get one for winter.

And then it struck me: which house scarf would I get?

Unlike a lot of HP fans, I’ve never really been able to choose a preferred Hogwarts house, and so how am I supposed to buy the relevant merch? Loads of people going to the concert were proudly sporting Gryffindor t-shirts or Hufflepuff scarves, and I see it all the time in book blogger’s Twitter bios ‘Ravenclaw’, or ‘Proud Slytherin’…but how have they decided on their house, and how can I decide on mine, bar trying on a fictional talking hat?

I’m certainly not very brave, which I guess immediately rules out Gryffindor (plus I feel like that’s probably the most popular house, and I do like to be contrary!), but nor would I describe myself as cunning, so not Slytherin. Generally I’d like to say I’m kind and compassionate, but I work in retail, and as any fellow (or past) retail workers will know, it can really try your patience, so I don’t think I’m calm enough to be in Hufflepuff (plus I get terrible road rage which doesn’t seem very Hufflepuff-y either)…so maybe Ravenclaw? I was considered a bit of a swot at school, but whether that translates into me being clever is another matter, but I do really like blue!

But then should I just choose by preferred colour? Because whilst I do like blue, I particularly liked the yellow scarves, and I like green much more than I like blue… It truly is a conundrum. It just seems like something every Harry Potter fan should know, and I really do want one of those House scarves I’ve seen around, so I’ll have to decide!

So do you know which Hogwarts house you’d be in? How did you decide? Or do you just buy the Harry Potter merch you like regardless of House?

I’ve thought for years that I would be in Ravenclaw, which was confirmed by Pottermore up until last year. When I read the series through for the first time, I wanted to be in Gryffindor, but I attribute that to a general bias that we didn’t see enough of the other Houses to really know which we would identify best with, like the factions in Divergent.

Pottermore tends to be the go-to for Sorting, but I haven’t trusted it since last year.

I’ve never used Pottermore, so I may have to give that a go, just to get some sort of idea of my house. Although I have kind of resigned myself to just having all sorts of random Hogwarts house merchandise, because I just love it all, and I have no idea which one I’d be! I definitely agree that there’s bias in the books towards Gryffindor, and I can remember really wanting to be a Gryffindor too when I read the books as a kid. I really wish we had seen more of the other houses! Like I wish we had got to see the Hufflepuff common room in the books! 🙂

The definitive way of finding out is Pottermore. I used it (twice) and both times got sorted into Slytherin. I don’t view myself as particularly cunning and I’m certainly not ambitious. I can be a little self-centred and put my own needs above others, though. And as I explained to my brother when he got sorted into Slytherin on Pottermore, it’s not a bad thing. I have to say, going on the basis of the books and the little you get about each house I don’t really sound like I belong in any. I’m certainly not reckless and brave like Gryffindor. I’m totally not nice enough to be in Hufflepuff. And whilst I like learning Ravenclaw and their intelligence doesn’t sound like me either.

You could also go off of your favourite colour because green isn’t my usual colour.

I really don’t know why I’ve never thought to try Pottermore! I’ll have to give that a go, and see what house I get! Slytherin definitely isn’t a bad thing, and I have probably got more Slytherin merch than any other house, just because Gryffindor is usually the most popular, and I like to have different stuff.
I don’t think I categorically fit the bill for any of them either though. I probably should just pick my favourite of the four colours and go with that (but then I have the conundrum of which of the four is my favourite colour…in general my favourite colour is purple, but that’s not an option!) 🙂

I buy whatever merch I like because I’m not going to spend money on something that I don’t like. Funny enough I’m actually tying this in my Hogwarts sweater from Primark. I used Pottermore and a few other sides and apps and I always end up either in Griffindor or Slytherin. But I lile what I like and don’t mind having merch from every house.
For me it doesn’t really matter what house I’m in, as long as I enjoy showing my pride being a Potterhead and like what I wear.

I really like your attitude to Harry Potter merch, and I may have to follow your lead! I just like Harry Potter-related stuff, so whatever House it’s to do with, I’ll probably like it 🙂

hahah omg, I feel you. For starters, I haven’t even read all of the books or seen all of the movies. I have taken the Pottermore quiz 3 times and each time I get a different house. According to the quiz I’ve been a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. TBH, I feel like I could fit more with Slytherin. >.<

    • Laura

I feel like the same would probably happen for me – I don’t think I definitely fit into any of them, so I don’t think a quiz could really figure it out for me! I am going to try the Pottermore quiz though, out of interest! 🙂

    • Laura

I’m glad the quiz agreed with you! I tried Pottermore and it said Gryffindor, which is definitely the one I least expected! 🙂

I’m not a huge HP fan, but I’ve always thought I’d be in Ravenclaw. I like the idea of picking by colour – for some reason I thought Ravenclaw’s colour was purple?? Which incidentally would be my favourite of the four, haha, but blue’s alright too 😉

    • Laura

I really wish there was a house that was purple because I’d definitely choose that one if there was! I think a lot of general Hogwarts stuff tends to be purple though 🙂

Girl! So relatable! I took the Pottermore quiz. The very first time, I got Gryffindor. But THEN they came out with the PATRONUS quiz. I took it and was NOT satisfied with a salmon, so I made multiple accounts. Well, everytime you make a new account, you have to take the sorting house quiz again. I got 3 out of the 4 houses! Hth. I still have my doubts, but in the end I chose based on pottermore all questions(search that quiz, it’s all the possible questions you get in the wizarding world quiz), and my favorite common room(there are pictures of all common rooms out there now with the 20th House editions). It still drives me crazy, but I already have the majority of Gryffindor merch. Some people do buy all house stuff, but that’s expensive.

    • Laura

I never actually took the patronus quiz I don’t think, so I’d be interested to see what I get for that! The questions for the sorting quiz did seem to be really random, so I imagine you could do it several times and get a completely different house each time.

    • Sani

Honestly, I’d say it doesn’t matter. It just comes down about being in a comfortable environment with similar people to help you grow. The house you’re in, doesn’t actually dictate what your traits are. For example Hermione Granger – a witty bookworm, a brilliant girl with talent and ambition. One could say that she’s a Ravenclow? Yet here she is, a proud Gryffindor! On the contrary – Peter Pettigrew a traitorous, cowardly Gryffindor. It’s not the hat that choices you based on some personality quiz. YOU choice it. Basically, what I’m saying – just go with you gut. And if your gut tells you, you want to be in multiple houses? Go with it! I’m a Ravenclow in most quizzes, but I prefer Hufflepuff, and ain’t nobody gonna tell me otherwise. 🙂

I’m sorta the same, except i feel like i’m a bit of all, i’m quite brave, i’m quite ambitious, i’m loyal, and i’m in the dumbest of the smartest sets in school, and no matter how many times i try potter more or any other quizzes, i always get put into a different house each time, and it really confuses me.

    • Laura

I guess you could class yourself as a GryfinSlytheRavenPuff then? I feel like the Pottermore sorting thing is definitely a bit weird! I’ve done it a couple of times and got something different both times! 🙂
