Liebster Award

I was recently nominated for a Liebster Award by Gemma from The Perfectionist Pen and Ginger Cat, so thanks so much to you both! Here’s the rules:

-Link back to the person who nominated you

-Post 11 facts about yourself.

-Answer the 11 questions set by your nominator

-Nominate 11 other bloggers with under 200 followers (you can’t nominate the person who nominated you)

-Set 11 questions for your nominees to answer

-Let your nominees know you’ve nominated them.

My 11 Facts:

1. I have two of the same job

That’s a weird sentence! Yes, I have two jobs at two different places that are the same: I’m a General Assistant on two different delicatessen counters.

2. I’m super shy

I get really nervous meeting new people and am just generally a very quiet person.

3. I had been reading blogs for a couple of years before starting Boats Against The Current

I had been thinking of starting a blog for a couple of years beforehand, but was a little nervous. I didn’t know what I was doing with all the technical stuff, or if my writing was good enough, or if I would be able to join in with the book blogging community because, as afore-mentioned, I’m very shy! I’m so glad I finally took the plunge back in July though, because it has been great fun, and all the people I have interacted with so far have been lovely!

4. I have an enormous collection of t-shirts

I’m writing this wearing one of the highlights of my collections: a Jurassic Park number. I must have hundreds though, ranging from old band t-shirts (Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses, the Ramones etc.), to book related (Hogwarts!), to comic book related (Batman, Marvel), and even drinks related (Pepsi, Coke, Cherry Cola).

5. I have two tattoos

One is on my foot, which I got for my eighteenth birthday, and the other is on my wrist (and is covering up another tattoo that I got and then didn’t like!).

6. I’m ginger…

‘Ginger’ was a word I used to hate, mostly because of its use as an insult back in my high school days, hence why I used to insist that I was a ‘red-head’, and not ginger. But what the hell? I am ginger, and it’s the rarest natural hair colour!

7. …although I’m prone to hair experimentation!

Over the years, I have had some, er, interesting hair styles. I started with a few red streaks, and then a few purple streaks (which looked kind of odd in ginger hair!) and then went the whole hog, dying my whole hair red, then purple, then brown, then really bright ginger! I’m currently my natural shade of ginger with the ends dip dyed bright red, so nothing too crazy.

8. I’m a TV Boxset nut

I’d say 90% of my DVD collection is TV boxsets as opposed to films. Except for when I go to the cinema I don’t actually watch a lot of films, but I love watching TV series. Some of my favourites are Game of Thrones, Lost, Homeland, Firefly, Friends, Scrubs, The Big Bang Theory and I’m currently in the middle of watching Breaking Bad (yes, I’m extremely behind the times!).

9. I love photography

Last year, I spent the money I earned doing overtime at Christmas on a bridge camera, and I have since gotten really into photography. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly good yet, but it’s fun (and has turned out to be pretty useful for blogging!).

10. I have a miniature schnauzer called Molly

She’s nine years old and absolutely adorable! Although because she has huge eyebrows and a beard, everyone who stops me in the street to stroke her tends to ask, ‘What’s his name?’ even though I have her wearing a really girly collar for that exact purpose.

11. I’m a huge fan of old rock music (and by that I mean 90s or earlier)

I love Pink Floyd, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Smashing Pumpkins, Guns n’ Roses, ACDC, Misfits, the Ramones, Nirvana…basically if it’s rock music then I probably like it!

My Answers:

Instead of doing two lots of questions, I picked a few from each nomination, so here’s my answers:

1. If you could be transported into any book, which one would you pick and why? e.g. Harry Potter to explore Hogwarts, or The Great Gatsby to experience one of Gatsby’s famous parties.

I’d definitely be making a sight-seeing trip to Middle Earth! I’d probably start with Hobbiton and then go on to Rivendell, Lothlorien and Gondor.

2. What is your favourite book cover?

As the title of my blog suggests, I love The Great Gatsby, and would love to own a copy with the original blue cover on it. I just think that it’s so striking and really captures a sense of the book!

3. Do you mostly read books or ebooks?

For me, it’s books all the way. I bought a Kindle years ago, but have rarely ever used it, so it was a bit of a waste of money! There’s just something about a physical book that’s special, and that an e-reader just can’t capture for me.

4. What is your favourite childhood book?

I would have to pick Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. I absolutely adored (and still do) the entire series, and as someone who has always loved reading, a book about characters coming out of a book, and readers going into a book was amazing! In fact, to this date, Dustfinger is still one of my favourite characters from a book.

5. If money was no object, which country/place would you like to visit and why?

I’ve never been abroad, so there are so many places I would love to go! France, Italy, America, New Zealand, Japan, Egypt…the list just goes on and on. Hopefully one day I’ll get to do a bit of travelling, and actually see some of these places.

6. What’s your favourite part of blogging?

Definitely the community! As I said earlier, I’m super shy, so it’s nice to interact with so many different people who share the same interests, and everyone has been so friendly.

7. Adaptations – book before film or film before book?

I always have to read the book first! I think with film adaptations it doesn’t matter so much if you already know the ending, because it’s just interesting to see how they’ve interpreted it, but I can’t stand having books ruined for me.

8. Chocolate or chewy sweets?

Chewy sweets all the way! I think I may actually be addicted to Haribo Tangfastics.

9. Should tomato ketchup be kept in the fridge or cupboard?

I always personally keep it in the fridge…don’t know why! I guess it isn’t something that necessarily requires chilling!

10. Night owl or early bird?

I’m definitely a night owl. I usually stay up to anywhere between 1 and 3 in the morning, and then either have to drag myself out of bed for work when my alarm goes off, or sleep in if I’m off.

11. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you take with you?

I’d have to take a book, and it would have to be one I’d be fine reading over and over, so probably Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I could read any Harry Potter book repeatedly and The Order of the Phoenix is both my favourite and the longest, so that’s why I’d pick it. I’d also have to take my Ipod, as I can’t go longer than a day without listening to music (not sure where I’d charge it though!). I’d say my phone as well, so I could talk to my friends and family, but I guess if I had a phone, I wouldn’t be stranded on a desert island!

My Nominations:

I think I may have re-nominated some people who have already participated in the Liebster Awards and I found it hard to figure out how many followers people had, so I have pretty much based it on Bloglovin followers. I just picked some blogs I liked, and there’s no pressure to participate!

Thanks so much for the lovely comment! It seems like we have a lot in common! And I will definitely be thinking of my hair as Weasley hair now 🙂

  2. Gemma

It was great to learn a little about you in this post 🙂 Glad you decided to start your blog – I always enjoy reading your posts! I was the same as you in that I’d been reading blogs for years before actually starting my own – I’m so glad I did though because, like you say, the community is lovely and it’s so nice to chat to people with the same interests 🙂
