I got an honorable mention in the Fall Writing Contest!

I got an honorable mention in the Fall Writing Contest!

A while ago I mentioned in my ‘Life Lately’ post that I’d entered the Fall Writing Contest (co-hosted by The Write Practice and Short Fiction Break), and I was so excited to receive an email a couple of weeks ago telling me my story had got an honorable mention! The theme of the competition was ‘monster’, and so I wrote the story ‘The Midsummer Maiden‘, which you can read here if you’re interested in seeing how I interpreted that theme. I’ve been shortlisted in a writing competition once before, and I have to say, it’s a huge boost to your confidence,… Read more »

My Plans for NaNoWriMo 2018

My Plans for NaNoWriMo 2018

So tomorrow is the start of NaNoWriMo 2018, and I’m still a bit undecided as to whether or not I’m actually taking part! I’m about 60,000 words into my current WIP, and have been averaging about 1,000 words a day for the past month or so. My aim was to finish it by December, so I could leave it to rest over Christmas and begin editing it in the New Year. I always love doing NaNoWriMo, as the community aspect is very encouraging and I definitely enjoy the challenge (you know, aside from the parts where you want to tear… Read more »

Life Lately #25

Life Lately #25

This month has been a month of catching up with people! Seen as my boyfriend has been working the past few Saturdays, I’ve spent them seeing friends I haven’t seen in a while, and hanging out with my sister. One of my catch-ups was at the start of the month, where I met up with a friend at a really nice little cafe. I got some amazing macaroni cheese there, with some of the best garlic bread I’ve ever had (it was basically just crusty bread buttered with garlic butter!), which is pretty crazy giving how much garlic bread I eat!… Read more »

Life Lately #24

August is over, and September is here, and on the whole its been a fairly boring month for me. After the excitement of having time off work back in July, August has pretty much just been work, work and more work unfortunately. It’s genuinely been one of those months where I’m having to rack my brains for anything to report, but thankfully I have one interesting anecdote: My mum, my sister and I took my two nieces and my nephew to Blackpool Zoo on Tuesday, and we had a lovely day! Thankfully all the animals seemed to be out, and we… Read more »

Life Lately #23

July has been a pretty good month for me, mostly because I was off work for almost half of it! I had a full 2 weeks booked off, and it was so nice just to have some proper time to relax, get out and do some things and spend time with my boyfriend, friends and family. And thankfully the weather cooperated for most of it, and stayed nice and sunny! I spent a lot of the holiday at my boyfriend’s, and we ended up going on several really nice day trips. We went to the Liverpool World Musuem one day,… Read more »

Camp NaNoWriMo Complete!

Camp NaNoWriMo Complete!

Back at the start of July I wrote a post about how I was going to do Camp NaNoWriMo this July, but I was going to put a spin on it: instead of working on a novel, I was going to write 30,000 words worth of short stories. Well, 15 short stories later, I’m pleased to say I reached my goal! My 15 stories varied in length from 500 words to 5,000, and were about everything from fairytales and alien princesses to traffic jams and ghosts! It turned out to be so much harder than I expected, and I had known it… Read more »

My (Belated!) Fourth Blogoversary!

My (Belated!) Fourth Blogoversary!

So this post is actually a couple of days late, but the 20th of July was Boats Against The Current’s fourth blogoversary! Hurrah! Starting a blog and becoming a member of the wonderful online book community has been one of the best things I’ve done, and I’m so happy to still be doing this four years later. Yes, it can be a lot of hard work, but it’s so worth it to be a part of this community, and to have a place to share my thoughts about books, writing and whatever else is on my mind with loads of… Read more »

Life Lately #22

Life Lately #22

It’s been a scorching hot June here in the UK, and it looks like the warm weather is going to continue through July. In fact, I think it’s supposed to be a month-long heatwave! I always start out by enjoying the warm weather, but after a while I find it starts to get a bit much, especially when I’m at work and having to wear a uniform that includes three layers, and involves standing by industrial ovens. I’ve been trying to make the most of it though in the evenings when it’s been slightly cooler. I’ve been sitting out on… Read more »

Life Lately #21

Is it just me who’s baffled by the fact it’s now June? Where has the year gone? How we are we almost halfway through already? May in particular has been quite a busy month for me, which you can probably tell from the scarcity of posts on this blog recently. Hopefully I’ll do better in June, but it could potentially be a busy month too! I was really happy to get to catch up with some friends I haven’t seen in a while this month. I met up with one of them for coffee and cake the other day, and… Read more »

How To Deal With Feeling Unmotivated

How To Deal With Feeling Unmotivated

We all have those days we had big plans for – we were going to write a blog post and a chapter of our novel, and clean the car – that we ended up spending in our pyjamas, binge-watching shows on Netflix. I mean, sometimes we have whole months like that because motivation can be a fickle thing. Sometimes you’re feeling it, and sometimes you’re just not. So what do you do when you feel unmotivated but have tonnes of stuff you need, or really want to do? Well, here’s a few tips for dealing with lack of motivation (something I’ve been… Read more »
