Life Lately #32

Life Lately #32

Happy May everyone! I can’t believe we’re nearly halfway through the year already! Crazy! This month, in particular, seems to have flown by, as I’ve have had quite a bit of time off work (which always makes time go faster!). As well as the Easter bank holidays I also had a week’s annual leave from work in honour of my birthday! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my actual birthday week off, so ended up spending my birthday at work (fun times!), but I did plenty of nice things in lieu of it the following week whilst I was off. I had… Read more »

How To Find Ideas For Discussion Posts

How To Find Ideas For Discussion Posts

Beginner book bloggers could be forgiven for believing that book reviews are the bread-and-butter of book blogs, but when you’ve been around a little longer, you know differently. Because let’s face it: book reviews are generally some of the worst performing posts on a book blog, which isn’t surprising when you think about it. Book reviews rely on your blog readers being interested in that one single book, whereas other types of posts – discussions for example – have a much wider appeal. They’re also, in my opinion, a lot more fun to write, and the level of engagement you… Read more »

Life Lately #31

Life Lately #31

We’re already partway through April, and as per usual, I’m wondering where the time has gone. I feel like March flew by, and I didn’t really do a whole lot other than work! I did meet up with my friend a couple of weeks back though, and it was so nice to see her, as I hadn’t seen her since before Christmas. We’ve always been really close – we used to live together! – but since we live quite far apart now we don’t see each other all that often, so it was nice to have a catch up (and… Read more »

My 2019 New Year Resolutions

My 2019 New Year Resolutions

Happy New Year everyone! It’s officially January, the time of year when everyone is briefly super motivated to do all the things they’ve been meaning to do, like get fit and quit smoking/drinking/chewing their nails! Not that I can really say anything: I’m one of the worst people for getting that ‘New Year, new me’ buzz, and then having let it all fall by the wayside by the time February rolls in. Most years since starting this blog I’ve written a New Year’s resolution post, and I’ll be the first to admit, I haven’t always stuck with them. That’s why… Read more »

My Best Reads of 2018

My Best Reads of 2018

Here we are again! The end of another year! I’m sure I’ll blink and it’ll be time to write my ‘Best Reads of 2019’ post, as that’s the way it feels these days. The years fly by! On the whole, this year has been a pretty good year for me, mostly because of the final month, where I started my new job and finally got to move in with my boyfriend! This feels like the first year in a long time where something has actually changed, and it feels like I’ve made some sort of progression. I’m still finding my… Read more »

I’m taking part in the 2019 Book Blog Discussion Challenge!

I’m taking part in the 2019 Book Blog Discussion Challenge!

I don’t take part in many blog challenges, but for the past few years I’ve been taking part in the Book Blog Discussion Challenge hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight, and it’s so much fun I’m doing it again this year! Discussion posts are easily my favourite type of blog posts to both read and write, and the Discussion Challenge is a great way to find loads of interesting bookish discussions, and share your own. I’ve actually found so many great blogs and bloggers through the Discussion Challenge, and it’s really… Read more »

Being A Slow Reader in the Book Blogging Community

Being A Slow Reader in the Book Blogging Community

Until last year, I had never taken part in the Goodreads Challenge, and therefore had absolutely no idea how many books I read in a year. I was completely oblivious, bumbling my way through book after book, and never counting how many I was actually finishing in a week, a month, a year… However, last year I finally decided to take part in the Goodreads Challenge, and I actually really enjoyed it! I feel like it encouraged me to read more, and I liked having that record of everything I’d read in the year, as opposed to completely forgetting everything… Read more »

How To Deal With Blogger Envy

How To Deal With Blogger Envy

Jealousy is an ugly emotion, but let’s face it: we’ve all felt it. It’s a perfectly natural emotion, which has only been intensified by modern society’s addiction to the internet. We spend our lives browsing through other people’s highlight reels – their beautiful holiday snaps and gushy enagagement announcements – and it makes us feel insecure about our own lives. And for us bloggers, who spend a lot of our time online, this emotion can be multiplied tenfold: perhaps you just read another blogger’s post that was so good you wish you could have written it, or they have a… Read more »

My (Belated!) Fourth Blogoversary!

My (Belated!) Fourth Blogoversary!

So this post is actually a couple of days late, but the 20th of July was Boats Against The Current’s fourth blogoversary! Hurrah! Starting a blog and becoming a member of the wonderful online book community has been one of the best things I’ve done, and I’m so happy to still be doing this four years later. Yes, it can be a lot of hard work, but it’s so worth it to be a part of this community, and to have a place to share my thoughts about books, writing and whatever else is on my mind with loads of… Read more »
