My Plans for NaNoWriMo 2018

So tomorrow is the start of NaNoWriMo 2018, and I’m still a bit undecided as to whether or not I’m actually taking part!

I’m about 60,000 words into my current WIP, and have been averaging about 1,000 words a day for the past month or so. My aim was to finish it by December, so I could leave it to rest over Christmas and begin editing it in the New Year.

I always love doing NaNoWriMo, as the community aspect is very encouraging and I definitely enjoy the challenge (you know, aside from the parts where you want to tear your own hair out because you’re drowning in plot holes, or there’s nothing you want to do less than sit at your computer and write!), but I’m not actually sure if there’s a full 50,000 words left of this book.

Not to mention the fact that the 1,000 words a day thing seems to be working for me right now, and so I don’t want to mess up my routine with added pressure… At the same time, I’ll definitely have to pick up the pace slightly if I want to hit my December deadline!

So in short, I think I’m going to informally take part. I’m going to track my word count through the NaNoWriMo website, but my aim is more to finish this book by the end of November, however many words that ends up being.

I probably won’t bother with the weekly updates I’ve done in past years, seen as I’m kind of doing my own thing here, but I’ll be sure to do a post at the end of the month to let you know if I finished or not! Of course, it would be at NaNoWriMo time of year that the full stop key on my laptop keyboard would stop working (so annoying!), but I have a keyboard for my IPad, so I guess I’ll be finishing up this novel on there!

So are you taking part in NaNoWriMo this year? What are you going to be working on?

I didn’t officially sign up because while I could definitely use 50k words in my WIP (I’m not too far into it), I don’t want to pressure myself too much. Plus, I’ll be out of town a bit in November and I doubt I’ll write then. But I do want to try and use the encouragement aspect of people writing and see where I can get with my WIP. A friend of mine signed up though!

Yeah, I think sometimes the pressure can actually be counter productive, especially if you know ahead of time that you have stuff going on that is going to mean you can’t write for some of the month. Best of luck with your WIP though, and good luck to your friend! 🙂
