I’m back with one of my infrequent updates!
I can’t believe January is nearly over already! Whilst Christmas now seems like a distant memory, this month has seemed to fly by at the same time, although I can’t say I’m sad to see the back of it. I always find January to be quite a gloomy month, and this one has been no exception.
For one thing the weather has been very cold and dreary here in England (more so then usual!), and whilst every year I hope for snow, yet again it’s just been rain, rain, and more rain. Oh, and ice! In fact I had a bit of an ordeal on my way to work on Sunday morning when I hit a patch of ice and my car skidded. I was completely out of control for what seemed like ages, and somehow ended up facing the complete opposite direction when I finally came to a stop! Thankfully no one else was around, so I didn’t hit anyone, and I very narrowly avoided both a parked car, and then a wall, but I was still pretty shaken up!
However, January hasn’t been all doom and gloom: I have had a few nice day trips out. My boyfriend and I took a nice trip up to Lancaster on Saturday for his birthday, and spent a good couple of hours wandering around, checking out the shops and walking up to the castle. Unfortunately the castle was covered in scaffolding, so it wasn’t exactly the most scenic, but I don’t think I’d have stopped to take any photos anyway because the weather was too miserable, yet again!
I’ve also had a couple of shopping trips with my sister and her new baby, so it’s been really nice to get to spend some time with them!
This year is the first year I’ve done the Goodreads Challenge, and so far I don’t think I’ve done too badly! I’m just finishing up my fourth book of the year, Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon (and it’s been quite a long one!), so I think I’ve been averaging one book a week. This puts me on track for my 50 books in 2017!
I seem to have got a bit of a backlog of reviews building up again though, as I still need to review The Queen’s Choice by Anne O’Brien, and The Brontë Cabinet: Three Live in Nine Objects by Deborah Lutz (which was amazing, and I would recommend to all Brontë fans!). Hopefully I’ll have reviews up for these soon!
Usually in January I’m fresh from having made my New Year’s Resolutions, so am pretty motivated as far as blogging is concerned, so I have no idea what’s happened this year! I’ve had such a lazy month, and I feel like I really need to buckle down and try and get back into blogging properly in February.
I’m just going through one of those phases where it seems like I have no ideas, although I feel like I’ve managed to write a few decent discussion posts this month:
Also, does anyone else find it super tough in winter to take your blog photos? It just seems like I go into work these days when it’s dark, and come out when it’s dark, so it’s hard to find a time when there’s enough natural light to get a good shot. Maybe I should try being organised and take them all on my days off, or even invest in some good lights or something?
…and Unmotivated January continues!
I’ve barely managed to scrape another few thousand words of my novel this month, although I did write a couple of short stories!
One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to try and get fitter, and eat better (original, I know), and whilst it hasn’t been a resounding success so far, I wouldn’t say it’s been a failure either!
I haven’t managed to get to the gym as often as I would have liked, but I’ve been eating a little better, and have managed to cut out a lot of snacks. I even did some cooking the other day, which is pretty impressive for me!
I also bought a Jawbone UP2 fitness tracker whilst I was out with my sister the other day, and have been absolutely loving it so far! For one thing, it looks pretty (I have this gold one!), and not like a fitness tracker at all, and for another the app is awesome! It monitors your steps and exercise, as well as your sleep (and the sleep thing seems to be really accurate from what I can see!) and allows you to log your food. As it gets to know your habits more, the app tailors itself to you and makes suggestions for how you can live a healthier life, which I think is pretty cool!
Whether it’ll actually have any effect on my health and fitness in the long run remains to be seen, but it’s pretty interesting just to see how far I walk a day, and how much sleep I actually get (answer: much less than I thought!)!
So how has your January been? Have you been unmotivated like me, or super productive? Have you been reading anything good?
