Bookish Fashion

Bookish FashionBack when I was in high school, I was a pretty wild dresser. Emo fashion was in its heyday and I was a big fan, so I would commonly be seen sporting shredded jeans and stripey tights, not to mention band t shirts and brightly coloured ties (yes, I apparently thought I was Avril Lavigne).

I don’t know what happened in the years that followed, but my sense of fashion seemed to calm down a lot and even slip into the mundane. I have always remained slightly alternative (I still have the crazy hair colours!), but my uniform had pretty much become a basic jeans and t shirt combo.

Whilst there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with jeans and a t shirt, I kind of missed having some personality in my clothing, so a few months ago I decided it was time to try and get some back. And what is one of my main interests these days? Books! Enter the wonderful world of bookish fashion!

I hadn’t really realised until I started to look properly that there’s so many book related fashion items out there, from t shirts and hoodies to jewellery and bags. I’ve started building up quite a collection, and these days the picture above is pretty much what I wear (plus pants! I always try and make a point of wearing pants when in public!). It’s still jeans and a t-shirt, but it’s a bit more quirky, and I like being able to show my interests through my clothes.

There’s still a fair few items on my wish list though, so I thought I’d do a quick post to share them!

Bookish Fashion

1. The Great Gatsby Out of Print T Shirt

I pretty much adore all of Out of Prints bookish themed t shirts, but I’ve been lusting after this Great Gatsby one for ages and ages!

2. A Room of One’s Own Penguin Classics Tote

I’m building up quite a collection of these Penguin Classics totes now (I already have an orange Great Gatsby one and a green The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes one), but I’d really like to add this purple Virginia Woolf one to the collection!

3. House Stark Game of Thrones T Shirt

I know technically this is a t shirt for the TV show, but seen as I love both the book series and TV show version of A Song of Ice and Fire, I’d really like this pink House Stark t shirt from Grindstore!

4. Pandora Fairy Tale Book Charm

I have been wanting a Pandora bracelet for a while (specifically one of the coloured braided ones!), and I think this fairy tale book charm in particular is so cute!

5. Harry Potter Hogwarts Pins

I keep seeing these Harry Potter pins in Waterstones and really want to buy one (or the whole set!). I just don’t know where I would actually wear one…maybe on my bag?

6. Lord of the Rings One Ring Keychain

Because who wouldn’t want the One Ring to rule them all on their keychain?

7. Primark Quidditch T shirt

Primark has so much great Harry Potter stuff in at the moment, and I love this Quidditch baseball-style top! I have this design on a regular grey t shirt, but had I known they did this version I would have gone with this one.

8. Primark Gryffindor T Shirt

I already have the Slytherin version, but I’d love the Gryffindor one as well! If only they did Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw ones, I’d get the whole set!

9. Library Stamp Out of Print T shirt

Another Out of Print t shirt, but I love this simple library stamp design!

So are you a fan of bookish fashion? If so, what are your favourite items that you own? And I’d love to know your wish list!

I love the look of the Penguin Classics Totes – where did you purchase yours from?

I love bookish shirts so much! I really want that stamp one though. It’s so simple but I really like that 🙂

  2. Kristen @ Metaphors and Moonlight

“I apparently thought I was Avril Lavigne.” Hahaha I love it. I’ve never been a wild dresser though. Jeans and t-shirts was pretty much always my go-to.

These are such cute clothes and accessories! I’d love to have some bookish clothes. There’s this one shirt on Amazon that says something like, “I love to party. And by party, I mean read books.” I really want that one since it’s so accurate lol.

Sometimes when I look back at old photographs and see some of the ridiculous outfits I used to wear I really wish I hadn’t been such a wild dresser either, but at least it gives me a good laugh!
That shirt sounds really awesome! I always mean ‘read books’ if I tell people I’m going to party! 🙂

  3. Greg

I’m all for House Stark stuff, I’ve seen some cool Game of Thrones clothes and stuff out there. 🙂

  4. Melissa @ Quill Pen Writer

I sadly don’t have that much bookish stuff (mostly a Court of Thorns and Roses book necklace) but hopefully that will change soon. I love numbers 4 and 9; I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for them so I can snatch them up. 😀

    • Laura

That necklace sounds amazing! I’d love some kind of A Court of Thorns and Roses or Throne of Glass related fashion items! 🙂
Hopefully we’ll both get some more bookish related stuff soon! 🙂

Yes I love showing my book nerdism through my clothes! I have a gryffindor jersey and it’s the one item of clothing I actually have random people come up to me and ask me about!

Primark are killing it with the licensed releases these days.

    • Laura

That Gryffindor jersey sounds great! And I love how bookish clothing can be such a conversation starter, as people can immediately see what you’re a fan of, and they might be a fan too 🙂
Primark has so many great t shirts these days with different things on! I have loads of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones shirts from there, and quite a few nice band t shirts.

I love some of these things. I didn’t realise Primark had some HP tees in! I most definitely need to take a visit to Primarni for some bookish additions to my wardrobe. I am much like you, I have allowed my style to become very plain. My uniform is jeans, tee and converse and I should probably change that. I think my issue is I’ve bought a lot of plain tops because I have been drawn into the capsule wardrobe idea and having lots of basic pieces. Also, I like to just be able to throw whatever on without thinking. I like the idea of adding a few small bookish pieces into what I wear and I love your suggestions!

    • Laura

Primark have quite a lot of HP tees in at the moment. In fact I bought another one today that’s grey with all the Hogwarts houses listed on it 🙂
I seem to have loads of plain tees too, but I wear them for work, so I think that’s probably why. They are so easy to wear and pair with other things though, so I know what you mean!
I’m glad you liked my suggestions 🙂
