One thing that can completely ruin a book for me is annoying characters, and there are certain character traits that just make me want to scream. Therefore, I decided to make a list of the character traits that annoy me most, and I’d love to know yours!
‘Say farewell to bondage! But say farewell also to ease! Say farewell to the weak! Say farewell to your treasures! More still shall we make. Journey light: but bring with you your swords! For we will go further than Oromë, endure longer than Tulkas: we will never turn back from pursuit. After Morgoth to the ends of the Earth!’ I… Read more »
My sister is my best friend, and we’re alike in so many ways. We both have the same taste in music, and drive around everywhere belting out our favourites. We’re the same size and have the same taste in clothes and may as well have a joint wardrobe. We both love going to the cinema, ice-skating and trips to Tesco… Read more »
Six months ago this week, I launched Boats Against The Current (which makes it sound like I set out on a long, arduous sea journey – I actually just started a blog!) and entered the big wide world of book blogging. Back then, I had no idea just how big or wide a world the book blogosphere was, and so… Read more »
Warning: This post contains some spoilers for later books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series – although any up-to-date Game of Thrones viewers should be fine! Once again… Read more »

So I’d love to know, when you discover a new blog, what is it that makes you (or stops you) clicking that follow button? I follow a lot of blogs but I definitely have my own criteria of what I am looking for which I use to not only decide whether or not to follow other blogs but to decide… Read more »
‘We don’t know what’s happened out there since they put us in here, or how many generations have lived and died since they did. We could be the last people left. “It doesn’t matter,” I say, more sternly than I mean to. “It doesn’t matter what’s out there, we have to see it for ourselves.”‘ It’s been quite a while… Read more »
I think everyone has read one of those books that in theory, should be great: it has an interesting concept, a good plot, a killer twist, skilful world-building if it’s sci-fi or fantasy… but for some reason, something about it just doesn’t click. Although it should be right up your street, it just doesn’t do it for you.
