Hi, and welcome to Boats Against The Current!
I’m Laura: a bookworm since birth (no, seriously – even before I could read I used to pretend to read!) and aspiring writer. My love of words led to me studying for a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at university (from which I recently graduated), and I have started this blog as a way to share my thoughts on books and indulge my passion for literature and writing. Therefore expect book reviews, my favourite literary quotes and general musings on everything from my favourite A Song of Ice and Fire characters to writing productivity!
As far as my reading habits go, I’ll read anything from the classics and literary fiction to YA, sci-fi, fantasy and historical fiction. Basically, if it’s a book, I’ll read it! Some of my favourites are The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, The Book of Human Skin by Michelle Lovric, Starter for Ten by David Nicholls, Looking for Alaska by John Green and The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson.
I’m also something of an amateur photographer, so all the photographs on this blog (except book covers) are my own unless otherwise stated.
And if the title of this blog sounds familiar, that’s because it’s from one of my favourite quotes from literature, the ending of The Great Gatsby:
‘Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther . . . And one fine morning –
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.’
