Hi, and welcome to Boats Against The Current!
I’m Laura, a bright-haired bookworm and writer from the North West of England. My love of words led to me studying for a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at university, and I’ve been blogging here since 2014 as a way to share my thoughts on books and indulge my passion for literature and writing. Therefore expect book reviews, writing discussions and my general musings on life!
As far as my reading habits go, I’ll read anything from the classics and literary fiction to YA, fantasy and historical fiction. Basically, if it’s a book, I’ll read it! Some of my favourites include: Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie, Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, and pretty much anything written by Sarah J. Maas!
I’m also something of an amateur photographer, so all the photographs on this blog (except book covers) are my own.
And if the title of this blog sounds familiar, that’s because it’s from one of my favourite quotes from literature, the ending of The Great Gatsby:
‘Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther . . . And one fine morning –
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.’
I hope you enjoy your stay!
